Website Design – The Strategy and Best Practices Behind UNC’s New Transportation Web Page

Pilot In the spring of 2025, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of Transportation and Parking determined it was necessary to launch a new web site. Working in collaboration with shared service providers on campus, the department embarked on a 6-month journey to overhaul and revamp their departmental web page. This presentation will consist of 3 topics: 1) An overview of UNC Transportation and Parking including the decision to redesign the web site and the process UNC Transportation and Parking used to incorporate feedback from internal subject matter experts and external customers. 2) industry standard communications best practices presented by our shared services communication manager. 3) A master class in web site design facilitated by our shared services digital solutions manager who will share industry best practices for web design and provide examples of adopted changes to the Transportation and Parking Website. This session offers 1 certification point for the PTMP Application and Recertification.Learning Objectives
Candace Lindo (UNC- Chapel Hill) Candace Lindo joined UNC-Chapel Hill’s Department of Transportation and Parking in 2022. As Executive Assistant and Project Manager, she supports leadership in strategic operations, oversees communications planning, and coordinates employee engagement directives. She has managed key initiatives, including the Accredited Parking Organization (APO) program, through which the department earned Accreditation with Distinction, UNC's Advisory Committee on Transportation and Parking, which guides sustainable and accessible campus transportation strategies, and the department’s Website Redesign project. Gary Wilhelm (UNC- Chapel Hill) Gary Wilhelm serves as the Digital Solutions Manager for the Division of Finance and Operations at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he manages approximately 30 WordPress websites as well as several dozen web applications. During his 25-plus years at Carolina, Gary has primarily focused on creating visually appealing, engaging, concise and easy-to-follow user website experiences for multiple departments and schools. Chris Katella (UNC- Chapel Hill) Chris Katella is a Communications Manager for the Division of Finance and Operations at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he supports strategic communications for Finance, Budget and Data Analysis, and Campus Enterprises. With over a decade of experience in higher education, Chris has focused on crafting engaging narratives across various platforms—from feature stories and video to social media and graphic design—to highlight the work and impact of students, faculty, and staff. |
